Hi Gary! Thank you for the nice comment, Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I understand about seeing pictures of yourself and it’s wonderful that it motivated you. For a lot of people it doesn’t. It didn’t for me for years. Until one day, I was digging in my drawer and I found a picture of me and I couldn’t believe my eyes! My family said it wasn’t me, well it was me! I recognize my shoes and handbag anywhere! I keep that picture on my fridge, and when the urge to eat hits, I look at it, breath and ask myself,am I really hungry?

For me it was getting up at 5:00 a.m. every morning (Mon – Fri) to exercise but when I saw some photos of me while my wife and I were on holiday, that was all the motivation I needed to become laser focused to change. I followed a lifestyle challenge which pretty much is what you describe above. It does seem counter intuitive to eat more doesn’t it. Of course it’s what you eat more of that you need to watch 🙂

I have started IF 3 weeks ago and my routine is quite similar to yours. We just got a FREE treadmill though, and my goal is to walk at least 15 minutes a day (to start, I have a heart condition) and work my way up from there. And keep eating well. I can completely relate to your struggles with weight. At times, I almost felt like I was reading my own story. Use other methods such as before photos to use in 4, 6 or 8 weeks time to see the changes that the scale won’t show. Also, my perspective of what a meal was evolved. I grew up thinking every meal needed to be a plate with a meat, veggies or fruit, carbs, grains, and dessert; and that just isn't accurate at all. I learned that it is totally acceptable to make meals like a bowl with veggies and protein. Or breakfast could include a big bowl of oatmeal with almond butter, greek yogurt, granola, and fruit. I incorporated a ton of fresh produce and didn't let myself buy junk food from the store. It's not always about eating less of everything either, it's less of some foods but more of others.

Going long stretches without eating was absolutely a challenge in the beginning – I won’t deny that. During that time I came to find that I really liked this way of eating, and especially the way it allowed me to effortlessly maintain my weight once the fat loss was done. It got even easier after I began to follow a more Paleo-esque diet (not perfectly strict Paleo, but fewer grains, high quality carbs, quality fats, very little sugar) and my body continued to adapt to burning fat for fuel and relying less on carbs for energy. I don’t even “deal with hunger” in the mornings anymore – while maintaining my weight I eat breakfast when I feel hungry. Sometimes it’s been 16 hours since my last meal (dinner the night before), and sometimes it’s 12 hours. Thanks to IF it’s easier to trust my hunger signals and I know that I’m eating because I’m truly hungry, not because I’m bored, stressed, lonely or sad.

Well, I should begin on the child hood years. As a child I was not over weight. I was pretty active as a child, my weight didn’t go up till I hit puberty. I guess all that candy and soda caught up with me. However when I hit about 15, the weight came back off, I was a cheerleader in the fall, and I played softball in the spring,and did a lot of other activities in between. Then when I hit 18 I really started to work out. I kind of got obsessed, I was working out to Carol Alt’s VCR tapes (remember VHS tapes?) and I got into the best shape ever. I am 5’11 and made it to 135 lbs, not too shabby. However, I didn’t eat that much and felt horribly guilty when I did eat. Not good! Honestly I don’t know what happened after that, to why I stopped working out that is. I guess that’s when I hit age 20. The discovery of pizza, beer, bars, guys and friends.
